Being conscious about safe storing is part of planning the trip!

When choosing to enter the psychedelic space, safety comes first - that includes preparation leading up to your experience including planning, intention setting, making sure the ‘Set and Setting’ has been thought out, creating a post integration plan and more. Planning should include properly storing your dried psilocybin mushrooms, as storing them is just as important as the growing and drying process. Did you know that light, moisture and heat will affect the quality, potency and psychedelic properties of dried mushrooms? Mushrooms are organic matter, which means they can easily spoil or mold if any sort of moisture is reintroduced.

There is a detailed methodology to growing the substance, which takes about 9-10 weeks, and they are not always easily available to acquire. Many people grow them or procure them in larger quantities with the intention to store them or save them for use down the line, which is why they must be stored safely. Properly storing your dried shrooms is the key to preserving the psychedelic potency and preventing decomposition. Dried magic mushrooms, on average, stored in a cool dark place, with absolutely no moisture, have a shelf life of about 8-12 months.

Properly dried before storage:

  • Mushrooms need to be fully dried of all moisture
  • Shroom stems should snap easily in half when bent
  • Caps should be able to crumble from pressure

Not storing properly:

  • Decomposition of mushrooms
  • Mold will form
  • Mushrooms will break down very easily with moisture
  • Moldy mushrooms could make you sick
  • Potency of psychedelic properties will deteriorate

Properly stored:

  • No moisture
  • No light
  • No heat

This can apply to dried mushrooms and also microdose capsules - storing them in a cool dark place with minimal moisture can last about 3-6 months.

The best long term storage hack is using a vacuum sealer to seal your shrooms airtight and keeping them in a freezer, this will preserve your mushrooms really well indefinitely. However, you need to purchase a vacuum sealer machine and it will be difficult to reseal the bag when removing smaller amounts of mushrooms depending on how often you use and how much you are storing.

The problem with mason jars is that they can allow sunlight exposure and also heat. This is also not the most discreet way to store them. Most other bags will allow moisture to get in and sunlight exposure. Storing them in the fridge is also problematic when warm air coming in, from the outside of the refrigerator, leads to condensation when it comes in contact with the fridge's cold air.

YAWN is for the informed mushroom explorer, those who seek high design and alternative states of mind. As educators and harm reduction advocates we are extremely invested in making sure people have a safe psychedelic experience. On that note, we have created a vegan leather inconspicuous mushroom-stash pouch called the ‘MUSH-STASH’. The MUSH-STASH has a waterproof and moisture resistant barrier lining, and a tight water repellent AquaGuard zipper to minimize risk of moisture damage or spoiling shrooms. It is made in LA and is meant for those who wish to keep their mushrooms in a dark space, secured from moisture. The bag can be stored at home or can be easily transported, as it is the perfect size. The MUSH-STASH can hold microdose bottles, edibles, dried mushrooms and more. It is important to note that the bag is not heat resistant and should be kept out of sunlight or warm areas.

What are we up against culturally?

Although this bag is a functional and discrete way to store your dried shrooms, it is important we are all aware of the consequences and legal limitations depending on geographic location. The War on Drugs is still prevalent and people are being incarcerated for possession of illegal substances and targeted unfairly based on racial discrimination. Although psilocybin can be beneficial, it is still not accepted by law enforcement in most states in North America. This bag should be carried with extreme caution and is also a great tool to keep at home.

We donate 15% of proceeds from every bag sold to the Drug Policy Alliance - we stand with them in the fight for responsible drug policy and equity.
